Philosophy in General

Philosophy degrees are all about asking big questions - the value of life, the basis of morality, the nature of the world around us. Thanks to the ever accelerating advancements made in the ‘hard’ sciences over the past 200 years, human knowledge has advanced to a point that once would have been inconceivable.

However, such disciplines can only really deal with ‘how’ – ‘why’ is a different matter altogether. Science cannot explain the purpose of human existence or fully get to grips with the complexity of human relationships; it can’t explain the value of life, or why something is right or wrong; and it cannot explore the ideas we use to make sense of the phenomenal world around us. This, instead, is the remit of philosophy.

Chinese Philosophy

Chinese philosophy is the intellectual tradition of the Chinese culture from their early recorded history to the present day. The main philosophical topics of Chinese philosophy were heavily influenced by the ideas of important figures like Laozi, Confucius, Mencius and Mozi, who all lived during the second half of the Zhou dynasty (8th to 3rd century BCE). Chinese culture as a whole has been shaped by the influence of these intellectual leaders.

Recent philosophy alumni have become stockbrokers, venture capitalists, marketing specialists, managers, editors, publishing industry executives, real-estate brokers.

Let’s face it: when you go to a job interview with a company, and you let them know that you are a philosophy major, your personal stock goes up. It shows that you are intrigued by difficult and fundamental problems, that your interests are broad, that you have a good head, and that you express yourself well.
