In 2016, investment in highway construction in Inner Mongolia autonomous region reached 91.5 billion yuan ($13.29 billion), with a total length of 0.19 million km built, including 5,153 km of express highways, 6,685 km of class I highways and 16,912 km of class II highways. Roads at the first and secondary level totaled 141,700 km, completing the goal of connecting all villages and towns with tarmacked roads, and 95 percent of the administrative village to asphalt roads.
In 2016, the total passenger volume by road was estimated at 104 million, with a total cargo volume of 1,306.13 million tons.
There are 14 express highways in Inner Mongolia autonomous region. These connect the region with other parts of China. The Beijing-Lhasa Expressway links the region with the nation's capital, Beijing, and Southwest China’s Tibet autonomous region; Beijing-Urumqi Expressway links to Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region; Suifenhe-Manzhouli Expressway links to Northeast China’s Heilongjiang province; Hohhot-Beihai Expressway links to South China’s Guangxi province; Hunchun-Ulaanhot Expressway links to Northeast China’s Jilin province; Dandong-Xiliinhot Expressway links to Northeast China’s Jilin province; Xinmin-Lubei Expressway links to Northeast China’s Liaoning province; Rongcheng-Wuhai Expressway links to East China’s Shandong province; and the Changchun-Shenzhen Expressway, Daqing-Guangzhou Expressway, Baotou-Maoming Expressway and Ereenhot-Guangzhou Expressway link to South China’s Guangdong province.
Those within the region are Hohhot Ring Expressway and Jining-Arun Expressway which connect Arun Banner in Hulunbuir, and Jining district in Ulaanqab.
