Located in Hohhot city, capital of Inner Mongolia autonomous region, Inner Mongolia University of Technology (IMUT) grew out of the former Suiyuan Higher Technical School which was established in 1951.

In 1958, with support from Tsinghua University, Suiyuan Higher Technical School was expanded and upgraded into Inner Mongolia Engineering College, and later in 1993 was once again upgraded and renamed Inner Mongolia University of Technology.

Occupying an area of 3,227 mu (215 hectares), the University consists of three campuses: Xincheng campus, Jinchuan campus and Jungar campus.

The university has been listed as one of seven schools that admit state scholarship students from Mongolia in the autonomous region since 2005 and began to recruit undergraduates from Mongolia.

It undertook the Inner Mongolia Government Scholarship and Chinese Government Scholarship training programs in 2008 and currently offers postgraduate education to students from Mongolia and Russia.
