Study in Hubei

The education system in Hubei, as elsewhere in China, can be simply summarized as "four educations" and "7 levels". The "four educations" refers to pre-school education, primary education, secondary education and higher education. The "7 levels" refers to kindergarten, primary school, junior high school, senior high school, higher college education, undergraduate education and postgraduate education.

Hubei embodies many famous universities, institutes and academies, including Wuhan University,Central China Normal University, Zhongnan University of Economics and Law and so forth.

Wuhan University

Wuhan University (WHU) is a comprehensive and key national university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education. It is also one of the "211 Project" and "985 Project"universities with full support in the construction and development from the central and local government of China.

The history of Wuhan University can be traced back to Ziqiang Institute, which was founded in 1893 by Zhang Zhidong, the then governor of Hubei Province and Hunan Province in the late Qing Dynasty. In the process of development and evolution, the institute changed its name several times before it was finally named Wuhan National University in 1928. It is one of the earliest comprehensive national universities in modern China. By the end of 1946, the university had established 6 colleges, the colleges of liberal art, law, sciences, engineering, agriculture and medicine. In 2000, an amalgamation of the former Wuhan University, Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping, and Hubei Medical University was announced, which ushered in a new era in its 100-odd years of development.

For the past century, Wuhan University has built an elegant palatial architectural complex of primitive simplicity which blends perfectly the eastern architectural style with that of the west. It is honored as the "Most Beautiful University in China." Furthermore, Wuhan University's centennial humanistic accumulation boils down to its succinct motto, that is, "Improve Oneself, Promote Perseverance, Seek Truth and Make Innovations."

Since its establishment, Wuhan University has cultivated more than 300 thousand professional talents in various occupations, among whom there are over 100 members of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. They have made great contribution to the national construction and social advancement. The remarkable achievements of Wuhan University have won itself an extensive international reputation. In 1999, the world renowned journalSciencelisted Wuhan University as one of the most prominent institutions of higher education in China.

Burgeoning are the international exchanges and cooperation of Wuhan University in recent years. It has established cooperative relationship with more than 400 universities and research institutes in over 70 countries and regions.

Zhongnan University of Economics and Law

Founded in 1948, Zhongnan University of Economics and Law (ZUEL) is located in Wuhan, a metropolis of Central China. It is an institution of higher education under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China with economics, law, and management as its core disciplines. These are coordinated with the development of eight other disciplines including literature, history, philosophy, engineering, etc. ZUEL is also one of the universities sponsored by "211 project", which is the Chinese government's new endeavor aimed at strengthening about 100 institutions of higher education and key disciplinary areas as a national priority for the 21st century.

ZUEL is comprised of the School of Humanities, School of Economics, School of Finance and Taxation, Xinhua School of Banking and Insurance, Law School, Criminal Justice School, School of Foreign Studies, School of Journalism and Mass Media, School of Business and Administration, School of Public Administration, School of Accountancy, School of Statistics and Mathematics, as well as School of MBA, School of Intellectual Property Rights, School of Further Education, and Wuhan School. There is a full-time teaching and administrative staff of 2,445 members at ZUEL, including 1,360 teachers, among which there are 219 professors, 472 associate professors, and 87 doctoral supervisors. ZUEL has 1 key research base of humanities at the state level, 2 key disciplines at the state level, 4 key research bases of humanities at the provincial level, 19 key disciplines at the ministerial and provincial level, 35 undergraduate programs, 64 master programs, 32 doctoral programs, and 3 post-doctoral programs. The university is also authorized to award MBA, EMBA, JM, MPAcc, MPA, ME (Master of Education) degrees, and enrolls students from overseas as well as from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao. It also enrolls approximately 20,000 full-time undergraduates, 5,000 postgraduate students, doctoral students, post-doctoral students, and over 5,000 adult students.

Zhongnan University of Economics and Law covers an area of over 210 hectares, and has a combined floor space of 800,000 square meters. The university has a collection of over 2.5 million volumes in its libraries, possessing the national and global information retrieval system and offering its students ready access to the cyber world. In addition, it has 8 modern stadiums, two of which were used as the major sports field for the National University Games, the National Series-A Football Match, the Finals of College Men's Soccer Tournament of China, as well as the East Asia College Socccer Match. It has two state-of-the-art auditoriums and over 30 apartment buildings that are uesd as student dormitories. Beautiful and spacious, ZUEL campuses are decorated with lakes, trees, grass and flowers.

In the fields of international academic exchange, ZUEL has developed a worldwide cooperative research and academic exchange relationships with universities and research institutions of more than 20 countries and regions in Asia, Europe, America, and Australia.

Zhongnan University of Economics and Law is open to all educators, scholars, and students from all over the world. Since the 1950's, we have nurtured many international students. In the past 58 years, ZUEL has cultivated more than 200,000 students and has made great contribution to the development of China.

Huazhong University of Science and Technology

The Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) is a national key university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education of P. R. China, and is among the first Universities joining the national "211 Project" and "985 Project". It was founded on May 26, 2000 as a result of the merger of the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji Medical University and Wuhan Urban Construction Institute.

At present, the University has eleven disciplines: engineering, medicine, management, science, philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history and agriculture, offering a variety of degree programs, including 86 undergraduate programs, 303 graduate programs, 237 PhD programs. There are 31 post-doctoral research centers, 7 national key disciplines, 15 national key subdisciplines.

HUST covers an area of over 1,153 acres with picturesque environment, elegant surroundings and has 72% greenery coverage, which has been honored as the "University in the Forest". It offers its students and staff first-class logistic service, efficient network service and abundant library resources. HUST has also entered into partnerships with more than 100 renowned universities and research institutions. Annually over 100 famous scholars and experts come to visit HUST and give lectures.

Now the University has over 1,000 professors and 1,300 associate professors, including 24 academicians, 65 professors receiving funds from the Cheung Kong Scholars program, 36 winners of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 36 listed in the "National Talents Project" and 135 young scholars listed in "New Century Outstanding Talents Project" of the Ministry of Education. In recent years, with the implementation of "New Century Education Reform Project", HUST has built up a course system based on such major disciplines as information, mechanics, civil engineering and environmental studies, electrical engineering, medicine, management, humanities, etc. It has greatly promoted the reform of credit system and English learning program for non-English majors, strengthened its education base and practical education reform, and built 13 student innovation bases.

HUST also holds science festivals, cultural festivals and various campus culture activities in order to build up a distinctive atmosphere of humanity, culture and education.

During the construction of "211 Project" and "985 Project", HUST has broken traditional discipline boundaries, integrated multi-disciplinary resources, played an active role in developing the national innovation system, built the high level and cross-disciplinary scientific innovation platform, and the innovation base of philosophy and social science. Meanwhile, all the 11 innovation platforms are under full development, including Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, the base of digital manufacturing of equipment and technology, the base of gravitation research, the base of transplantation medicine, the base of environment and health, the base of national defense science and technology, as well as the philosophy and social science base featured with "scientific development and humanism".

Central China Normal University

Located in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province and a major hub of transportation in China, Central China Normal University is a key comprehensive university directly under the administration of the Chinese Ministry of Education. The picturesque campus of over 2,000 Mu (330 acres) is nestled on Guizi Hill, bordering South Lake. As one of the universities on the list of 211 National Education Priority Project, Central China Normal University is highly recognized as an important base for cultivating brilliant talents for the country, as well as a superior training center for excellent teachers in higher learning institutions and high schools.

Our university is among the first higher institutions in China entitled to offer doctoral and postgraduate degrees, to assess and confer the titles of professor, associate professor and also doctoral supervisor, and has already established a complete and optimized advanced education system from undergraduate to graduate programs, from doctoral to post-doctoral programs, and from full-time to adult-education programs.

Our research strength is witnessing a constant increase year by year. The national social science research work of CCNU ranks top 10 for three consecutive years, and its social science research work by the Ministry of Education ranks top 6 for four consecutive years. Ranking No.8 in the Fourth Social Science Prominent Scientific Result Award, a series of our research results have won prizes including two fist prizes of the Natural Science Award by Chinese Ministry of Education and six first prizes of Hubei provincial Natural Science Award.

We have established close relations with many key universities and research institutes and have conducted school-to-school exchanges and extensive academic cooperation with more than 100 universities from over 70 countries such as the USA, Canada, Germany, Japan, Russia, France, New Zealand, Australia, South Korea, and Vietnam. Foreign experts and teachers are regularly invited to teach at the university. In recent years, teachers of the university have been constantly sent abroad for further study, a majority of whom have returned home to become the backbone in their own teaching and research field; a good number of them are active on international academic rostrum and have made admirable contributions to science, technology, culture and education exchanges between China and other nations around the world.
