Located in the southwest of Yangzhou and formerly known as Hanjiang Industrial Park, Yangzhou High-tech Industrial Development Zone (扬州国家高新技术产业开发区) was constructed in 2001 and approved as a provincial-level economic development zone by the provincial government in 2006. In 2012, it was renamed Yangzhou High-tech Industrial Development Zone and was officially upgraded to a national-level high-tech industrial development zone in 2015.

Yangzhou High-tech Zone has a total planned area of about 60 square kilometers and enjoys a jurisdiction of nine villages and two communities. Its built-up area has reached 20.2 square kilometers.

After years of cultivation and development, Yangzhou High-tech Zone has formed a new development pattern, led by computer numerical control (CNC) equipment manufacturing and supported by biotechnology, new optical and modern services.

Several innovation platforms have been set up, such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences Yangzhou Center (national-level technology transfer demonstration agency), Jiangsu Provincial Academy of CNC Machine Tools and Tsinghua University Intelligent Equipment Research Institute.

A number of entrepreneurial platforms have been established, such as the High-tech Innovation Service Center (national-level science and technology incubator), Yangzhou University Science Park and Jin Rong Science Park.

The zone has been awarded titles such as CNC Sheet Metal Processing Equipment Manufacturing Industrial Base for the National Torch Plan, National Cultural and Creative Industry Demonstration Base, Jiangsu New Industrialization Demonstration Base and Jiangsu High-end Equipment Industry Demonstration Base.
